3 ways to add a sheet mask into your daily routine

Written by Chelsea Tromans

Sheet masks came onto the beauty scene a few years ago after they became hugely popular in South Korea. The K-Beauty staple then quickly took over Instagram and while they made for a cool selfie, it was hard to know whether they were simply a fad.

Well, we’re here to tell you that sheet masks are a great way to instantly boost your skin’s radiance. And they shouldn’t be reserved for the occasional self-care session.

What are sheet masks?

Sheet masks are single-use thin sheets - made from materials like cotton, fabric or tissue - that are soaked in a serum and applied to the face. The sheet helps seal in the serum so it can deliver its potent ingredients to your skin over the 10 or so minutes that you’re wearing it. Sheet masks may deliver a variety of skin benefits, depending on the formula it's soaked in, but the most common benefit of a sheet mask is hydration.

3 ways to add a sheet mask into your routine

Sheet masks are a popular addition to pamper sessions but these skin treats shouldn’t be saved only for special occasions. Here’s how to get the most out of them:

Before moisturiser in place of a serum

Don’t be fooled by their name. While sheet masks can act like a nourishing mask, you should really think of them more as a serum-mask hybrid. The ‘sheets’ are really just a delivery method for that serum formula that it’s been soaked in. Sheet masks should always be applied to clean skin. Afterwards, pop on your go-to moisturiser over the top to finish off your skincare routine.

Good to know: Unlike most masks that are designed to be washed off after the recommended application time, you should leave the sheet mask’s serum formula on your skin, just like you would a traditional serum. If your skin feels too wet after removing your sheet mask, try massaging the formula into your face, and down your neck and décolletage. If there’s still excess, pat your skin with a clean cloth.

In the AM for a morning glow

Sheet masks can leave skin looking beautifully hydrated and dewy, which is why we love them for a morning pick-me-up. That glow is meant to be shared with the world! Who knows, you may even feel inspired to go makeup-free when you spot that radiant complexion looking back at you in the mirror. We are big fans of Minenssey Nutritious Skin Treatment. The combination of brightening, hydrating and balancing benefits are great for perking up tired skin.

In the evening for some downtime

Sheet masks are both great for your skin and a relaxing way to wind down at the end of the day. They force you to lie back and do nothing (they’ll slide off your face if you try to get up and move around too much). Make sure you cleanse your face beforehand so your skin can drink in all those nutrients in the mask’s serum.
